The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by young people up to the age of 15. It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the class. Optimists are sailed in over 120 countries and it is one of only two sailboats as an International Class by World Sailing exclusively for sailors under 16. Optimists are a great way for children to learn to sail.

Please be informed that all junior students are required to pay an annual enrollment fee of $125 upon applying to participate in a sailing course. This fee covers the cost of registration, materials, and access to the sailing facilities.
The enrollment fee is due at the time of acceptance and is non-refundable. It is valid for one year from the date of payment.

Our Optimist Learn-to-Sail 1 course is for beginners or for sailors who have done a bit with mum or dad and want to start off building skills and technique from the beginning. The Optimist is used across NZ and the world as a beginner boat for sailors aged 8-12
Optimist Level 1
Our Optimist Learn-to-Sail 2 course is for our improver sailors who have completed our LTS 1 or similar at another club. In this course sailors will continue to build on their skills from LTS 1 and introduce some new and more complex concepts. With the aim to be sailing our boats as efficiently and fast as possible!
Optimist Level 2
Optimist Learn-to-Sail 3 course is for our intermediate sailors who are ready to start preparing for Green Fleet! This course is for those who have completed a LTS 2 with us previously – otherwise if you’re coming from another club or sailing program and you think the LTS 3 course is right for your sailor please get in touch before booking.
Optimist Level 3
Optimist Green Fleet is for sailors who are confident and possess all the skills needed to move into a Race Group. This group is where sailors will begin racing in a fun and friendly environment! In Green Fleet sailors will be introduced to racing concepts, like tactics, strategy and boat handling.
Sailors can use their own boats from Green Fleet onwards if they have them. Otherwise, we do provide club boats for use!
Optimist Green Fleet
