About

Designed for teens ages 13 and up, the Beyond Optimist Program takes sailing to the next level. Students will develop their skills on single-handed boats like the RS Quba or Laser, or team up to master the art of sailing in two-person or crewed boats such as the RS Quest. With a focus on independence, teamwork, and advanced techniques, this program offers an exciting and rewarding path for young sailors to grow their confidence and capabilities on the water.

Key Highlights:

  • Starts with the RS Quba or RS Quest for skill-building and confidence.

  • Progresses to the Laser for advanced sailing and racing techniques.

  • Focus on independence, precision, and strategy.

  • Ideal for teens aspiring to compete in regattas or further their sailing journey.

  • Lessons are delivered in a 4-lesson pack format, allowing students to progress from beginner to advanced levels at their own pace, depending on their individual abilities and skill development

By the end of Beyond Optimist Program, you will be able to independently launch, rig, and sail a Laser or RS Quest dinghy. Topics covered include:​

  • Launching and rigging

  • Capsize recovery

  • Controlling sail shape with sail controls

  • Body mechanics

  • Tell-tale use 

  • Roll tacks â€‹

ILCA - LASER

About the boat

  • Type: 1 person Dinghy 

  • Ideal Weight Range: 4 (55-65kg) / 6 (60-75kg) / 7 (70-90kg)

  • Length: 4.2m

  • About: the ILCA is a single-handed racing dinghy with over 200,000 boats in 140 countries, it is the world’s most popular adult and youth racing sailboat. This makes it one of the most accessible and affordable sailing classes globally.

Requirements:

  • At least 14 years old

  • Weigh 50kg minimum

  • Able to swim 50 yards 

  • Sunglasses and hat are recommended

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Sailing boots or shoes that can get wet.

  • Come to class on time

  • Have fun!

Minimum weights for the ILCA sails are:

  • ILCA 4: 50kg

  • ILCA 6: 60kg

  • ILCA 7: 75kg

RS QUEST

About the boat

  • Type: 2 to 4 person Dinghy (365kg max crew weight)

  • Typical Weight Range: 130-160kg

  • Length: 4.29m (14'1")

  • Beam: 1.83m (6'0")

  • Hull weight: 140kg (309lbs)

  • About: a modern family or training dinghy with features that move the game forward. Also a popular racing boat, and it is used in a variety of regattas around the world.
